Statewide assessments of reading achievement show that the proportion of students proficient in reading declines as they move from elementary and middle school to high school. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning has launched a multi-year initiative that will champion high-quality teen services and build momentum behind Wisconsin's drive to create the most literate, well-educated citizenry and workforce in the nation. This 2-session workshop is part of that initiative.

Morning session:
9:30 - 11:30 am (2 hours)
The Teen Brain: A Work In Progress
Presenter: Jeanne Leccia Erickson, Director, Leccia and Associates, Inc.
Continuing education contact hours: 2

Teenagers are all too often viewed as young adults, ready and equipped to face the world and all its challenges. Research is telling us however, that the teen brain is still a work in progress. This workshop will take a look at the biology of the teen brain, how and why gender matters in respect to the adolescent brain. Participants will also receive practical applications for engaging teens.

Lunch 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
There is a $5 charge for lunch, payable at the workshop.
Afternoon session: 12:30 - 2:00 pm (2 hours)
Adolescent Readers: Interests, Motivators, and Barriers
Presenter: Kathy Schmitt, Literacy Coordinator, CESA 6

Explore how adolescents view reading, the challenges facing teens in continuing to value reading, and what we can do to help develop life-long readers.
