ImageSecurity Incidents & Your Safety in the Library workshop

Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2014
Time: 9:30am to 12:30pm
Location: Ripon Public Library (map)
Presenters: Michael Melland and Steve Albrecht

As important as it is to try to prevent library security incidents, it’s not always possible to avoid them, and the way you respond when they happen is crucial.

This workshop will consist of two presentations:

1. How to Respond to a Security Incident in Your Library

  • This presentation will take the top 10 security, behavior, crime, or emergency-related incidents that occur in libraries and describe the issues, the concerns, and the responses surrounding them.
  • Many of the scenarios will involve challenging or problem-inducing patrons, and others will discuss responses to events that staff might not always know how to deal with properly.
  • Steve will talk about the importance of having Rules of Conduct that are posted prominently in the library.

Presenter: Dr. Steve Albrecht worked for the San Diego Police Department from 1984 to 1999, and is the author of 15 books on business, workplace security, and criminal justice topics.  In 1994, Dr. Albrecht co-wrote Ticking Bombs: Defusing Violence in the Workplace, one of the first business books on workplace violence.

This format of this session will be a recording of an ALA Editions Workshop, for which Winnefox purchased a group license.

2. Safety in the Library

  • Mike will talk about the importance of having an Emergency Response Plan in place, and will provide an example to use as a template for drafting your own library's plan.
  • He'll talk about the importance of reaching out to your local authorities, with the understanding that this can be an issue for libraries that are located in small communities and/or large counties.
  • Bring your questions or examples of incidents that have happened in your library for the Question & Answer session, and Mike will offer answers and suggestions.

Presenter: Michael Melland is a veteran of over 30 years in law enforcement, including serving as Chief of Police for Winneconne and as Director of Protective Services at UW Oshkosh.  He retired from law enforcement in 2010 and is currently Director of the Poy Sippi Public Library, and works as an instructor & consultant advising clients at law enforcement agencies and private companies.
