Salutations! We are now distributing RBDs to all libraries.
What are RBDs, you might ask?
RBDs (or "Red Box Dots") are the replacements for the RBS (Red Box Stickers). They should show up in your deliveries on Monday or Tuesday.
Instead of sticking on a not-very-removable 3x3 white RBS sticker, you can now use a Red Box Dot (RBD). These are the standard Avery removable ¾” dots that libraries use for all sorts of things (think items on Display, or New Books, etc). Definitely removable and almost completely residue-free.
I will be updating the flow charts and documentation, but in the meantime here is an outline of the new steps:
- Item from another library arrives in the Red Box
- Look for Wear & Tear sticker/stamp
- If there: Fill the hold
- If no Wear & Tear sitcker/stamp, assess the damage
- If item is circulatable, put an RBD as close to the barcode as possible (without covering it).
- When item comes back from patron, remove the RBD and stick it on a Wear & Tear Flag and note the issue. Check it out to DA-XX, and send it home.
- If item is not circulatable by your standards, stick a Wear & Tear Flag in it and note the issue (and that you didn’t think it was circulatable), check it out to DA-XX, and send the item home.
The primary changes are that patrons aren’t seeing a big form and we’re making the W&T Flag the means of communicating what’s wrong to the owning library.
Hopefully, this will work better. I know some libraries have been using the big white stickers with removable tape, and that is fine if you want to use them up. However, we did get a refund for them (since they didn’t work as advertised), so don’t feel obliged.
We are starting with 240 dots/library (except the big 3). Let me know if you need more to start with. I will also update the Extranet form for ordering Problem Item supplies, so you can always use that form when you need more.
Please let me know if there are questions, comments, concerns. I’ll be interested to know if this helps make the process less cumbersome or if it is too streamlined and info is getting missed.
Thank you all! I really appreciate all the feedback we’ve been getting throughout this process.
As always: Please share with your staff!
Make today a good day!
