There are a multitude of mystery novels published each year. It can be a struggle to know which titles will be the most popular, or which new authors are sure to be a hit with your patrons. Join us as Susan Belsky discusses these topics and much more. There will be door prizes!
Topics Susan will discuss:
- What defines the mystery genre? Sub-genres?
- Selection tools and review sources
- What to look for when selecting mystery novels
- The 50 most popular (by circulation) mystery novels in WALS
- New & upcoming titles, and new authors to watch for
- Display ideas for marketing your mystery collection
About the presenter: Susan is a retired reference librarian and book selector, having worked at the Oshkosh Public Library for over twenty years. She has written book reviews for Library Journal and her blog for the last 9 years, and is a reviewer for the Buried Under Books blog. She is a member of Sisters in Crime and Mystery Writers of America.

11:15 AM WYS-GUYS (Winnefox Youth Services) Meeting
Marie Boleman will moderate a youth services discussion following the morning workshop. Topics will include:
- Bring any of your library's puppet or storytime kits that are designed to go with specific books or stories, so we can see what other libraries have and are willing to share. Marie can take pictures of each and compile into a resource accessible on the Extranet, since many of these in-house kits are not in the catalog.
- Let's talk about our successes and challenges in serving families and educators.
- Oshkosh PL has partnered with the Oshkosh area School District 4k to create an early literacy initiative that helps families get kids ready to read and ready to learn. Marie would love to tell you about the project and where OPL plans to go from here.
The discussion is scheduled for 11:15 and you are welcome to bring lunch or snacks.
