Copy-Level Holds

Staff must place a copy-level hold for anything that is packaged is parts, issued in a series, or for specific magazine issues.  Any other hold should be placed as a title hold.  Often, the user gets poorer service with a copy hold because there might be problems with locating a specific copy and other copies might be available.

Within the catalog, if a user selects a copy-level hold, he/she fills out an online form that is emailed to a designated person at each library.  The library receiving the email is based on the library selected by the patron when the catalog search session was started--the one picked from the opening screen of the catalog, or the library webpage if the seach started from a library site.

The person handling the email form should NOT do a copy-specific hold if not necessary.  The emailed form displays the call number.  If there is no part or number in the call number, there is probably no reason to do a copy-level hold.

If the hold request is for a DVD that one library has packaged as a complete set, and another library has packaged in parts, the user probably wants the complete set.  That will require a copy-level hold or holds to get one complete package.
