Digitization

Preserve your library's local resources while making them available to a wider audience through your library's web site! Winnefox can help you improve access to these materials while preserving the originals -- all you need to do is...

  • arrange for the digitization of the materials (scanning of the originals, done by a designated staff person, volunteer or by outsourcing - we can recommend outsourcing options)
  • assign metadata, which are keywords that describe the materials so they're searchable (we can provide your staff or volunteer with a web form into which they can enter the metadata)

and then Winnefox does the rest! To find out how you can get started on your digitization project contact Keetra Baker at baker(at)winnefox.org.

To get an idea of what we can do for your library, take a look at the projects libraries have done:

Oshkosh Public Library Digital Collections
These collections use CONTENTdm technology and are hosted at DiMeMa.  CONTENTdm allows you to enter searchable metadata information for each image, which then allows you to search within compound (multiple-image) objects, within collections and across collections.  The Oshkosh Public Library Digital Collections include:

  • Barns of Winnebago County -- A photo collection of barns by local photographer Michael Cooney.
  • Library Events -- Photographs of kids and teen summer reading programs, author visits and other events that have been presented at the library.
  • Main Street, Oshkosh -- Postcards and photographs show views of Main Street, Oshkosh throughout the years.
  • Oshkosh at 151 -- Online community scrapbook of photos submitted by area residents memorializing life in the community during its 151st year.  Oshkosh at 151 is a joint project between Oshkosh Public Library and OshkoshNews.org.  This project allows residents of Oshkosh to upload photos to a community scrapbook online.  Visitors can browse the images that have been submitted or search by keywords or names for a particular image.
  • Oshkosh Businesses -- Photographs and newspaper articles about businesses that existed in Oshkosh.  Our Oshkosh Businesses collection currently showcases photographs and newspaper clippings about four businesses that existed in Oshkosh.  You can choose to view the items relating to a particular business or you can browse the entire Oshkosh Businesses collection at once.  You can also perform a search across all of the items.
  • Oshkosh Local History Books -- Twenty-five local history books (mostly books of pictures) spanning 1887 to 1919.
  • Winnebago County Rural Schools -- A collection of photographs dating from the early 1950s of school buildings from across the county. The images have been digitized to help document local education and architectural history. This collection has been made available through the cooperation between the Forrest Polk Library of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the Oshkosh Public Library.

Fond du Lac Local History Manuscripts

Manuscripts of two books of historical essays written by students at Marian College under the supervision of Clarence B. Davis, reproduced online with his permission.

Oshkosh City Directories -- Thirty-one city directories spanning 1857 to 1922.  These thirty-one city directories are available in PDF format either by browsing or searching.  When browsing, you can choose to view a specific section of a specific year's directory.  The size of each file is clearly labeled and special care was taken to minimize file sizes (generally < 1 MB) for faster downloads.  At request of our patrons, we also offer links to each complete section and each complete directory which are larger in size, but easier for those with broadband connections to work with.  The search feature uses a technology called Swish-e and performs a search within the PDF files of all the directories at once.
