Holds for Book Clubs

Holds for Book Clubs

When copies of a book are needed for a reading club the simplest solution is to place a hold for each member of the club.

To have all of the copies available at the same time, this option may be used:

Local Holds

The library field in the patron's record determines which libraries copies of local holds he/she will get.

Example:  A user in Westfield places a hold and gets a local-hold copy from Oshkosh.  That will happen if the library field in the user's record is Oshkosh.  That user will never get a Westfield copy of a local hold.

Copy-Level Holds

Staff must place a copy-level hold for anything that is packaged is parts, issued in a series, or for specific magazine issues.  Any other hold should be placed as a title hold.  Often, the user gets poorer service with a copy hold because there might be problems with locating a specific copy and other copies might be available.

Missing Contents

Procedure—Handling Missing-Content Items

The library where the missing-content item is returned is responsible for handling that item, regardless of the owner of the item.

Transferring copies or call numbers

The attached document shows how to transfer copies from one title record to another.

Multiple email addresses

A user can have more than one email address in his/her record.  Both addresses go in the email field.

Separate the two addresses with a comma, and no space.

Guidelines for entering teacher cards

Before entering a teacher card record in the database, search to make sure a card hasn't already been issued.  There is only one Teacher card per person, regardless of how many libraries the patron uses.

If there is no existing record, enter a new one using the same process as a regular record, with these additional steps:
