Useful Spanish Phrases for Librarians

Each section has an accompanying sound file (.mp3 format) which you can listen to you if your computer has a sound card, multi-media player and speakers. The phrase list is also available in Microsoft Word 2000 document (.doc) format. These resources were created for the Arrowhead Library System by Maria Elena White (with funds from a LSTA grant), and have been adapted for the Web by Winnefox Library System.

  • Emergencies -- fire; tornado warnings; police; ambulance; etc.
  • Problems -- where is a member of your family; don't cry; please don't; etc.
  • Directional:
    • Part 1: location of bathrooms & bubblers; do you need help; etc.
    • Part 2: videos and DVDs are over there; childrens' department; follow me; etc.
  • General statements -- hello; I speak very little Spanish; thank you; you're welcome; etc.
  • Information:
    • Part 1: do you want a library card; what is your last name; when is your birthday; etc.
    • Part 2: sign your name here; how old are you; your Mom or Dad must sign your application; etc.
    • Part 3: do you have an email address; you cannot use your card because; you have items overdue; etc.
  • Checking out materials:
    • Part 1: do you have a library card; you can check out only 2 DVDs; you have a fine; etc.
    • Part 2: you have an item that is long overdue; you cannot use the Internet because; etc.
    • Part 3: did you check for the books under your bed; did someone else use your card; these items are due back; etc.
