There are certain basic circulation tasks that every library circulation desk worker needs to be able to do proficiently if he/she is ever working alone at the desk.
- Looking up a patron by name or address
- Checking birthdates
- Checking out material
- Renewing material
- Looking up the fine list
- Paying fines
- Handling an expired card
- Replacing a library card
- Discharging in #1 (Borrower Services) to get fine information for a patron
- Discharging in #2 (Circulation Services) for bulk discharging. Note: This maintains the borrowers privacy.
This is a less cluttered screen, so it's easier to see messages.
- Handling route and hold messages in discharge
- Issuing a card to a first time user
- Changing patron information and registration qualifiers
- Calling up a patron's Has List
If WALS, via the Oshkosh circulation department, is training new WALS library staff, these are the things they will be trained to do.
If WALS gets support-call circulation questions, we expect that the desk worker knows how to do these tasks.
Note:
This does not apply to the libraries that use a short, off-line circulation program to capture circulation transactions at times to cover a vacation period or a day of the week (Sundays in Green Lake) when a volunteer with less training covers the building.
