Wiscnet Filtering

Here's some general info about filtering public internet PCs using Wiscnet's 8e6 filtering service. Currently, the following Winnefox libraries filter their PCs: Brandon, Fond du Lac, Neenah, Oshkosh Children's Dept., Redgranite, Ripon, and Winneconne.

WiscNet offers a solution from the 8E6.Com Company that uses R2000 servers augmented by high-speed Blue Coat web cache servers.

  1. What is being blocked?
There are about 80 categories of URLs that 8e6 blocks. For a list of the categories, and to see which libraries filter what categories, go to: http://extranet.winnefox.org/fileadmin/user_upload/documents/WhoFiltersWhat.xls.
  2. What control do we have over what gets blocked?
Each library can specify which categories get blocked at their site. To change what categories are being blocked at your library, contact Karla Smith (920) 236-5257 smith(at)winnefox.org
  3. Will this fulfill the new filtering law?
WiscNet's policy states that they will: "Operate a filtering service that permits our members to comply with local community standards and certify compliance with applicable State and Federal law."

Our current network setup which allows us to customize by library, also causes a problem, namely this: If library staff override the filter at one PC in their building, they override the filter on all PCs in the building.
